Description
Day 1
Santiago de Chile
Arrival at the airport of Santiago and transfer to our hotel.
After we have left our luggage here, our 4-hour city tour begins, during which we visit, among other things, the Cerro Santa Lucia, the Museo Nacional de Buenas Artes, the central market with its colorful hustle and bustle, the Plaza de Armas, the presidential palace "La Moneda" , visit San Francisco Church and Lastarria neighborhood.
We spend the night in the Hotel Marina Las Condes **** or Hotel W Santiago *****. - / - / - meals on the plane
Day 2
Santiago - Calama - San Pedro de Atacama
After breakfast our flight takes place via Santiago to Calama in the Atacama Desert.
After arriving in the mining town, we start our journey to the oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama.
In the afternoon you have the opportunity to get to know this charming little town.
3 nights at Hotel Casa de Don Tomas *** or Altiplanico San Pedro ****. F / - / -
Day 3
Salar de Atacama & Moon Valley Valle de la Luna
Today we visit the salt lake Salar de Atacama with the Laguna Chaxa.
We first start towards the Atacameño village of Toconao, where we can get to know the plaza and church on a short visit.
Then we reach the salt lake Salar de Atacama.
This salar is the largest salt lake in the world, it was created millions of years ago by the upheaval of the Andean Cordillera and the Cordillera Domeyko.
It is impressive to see the spread out salt crusts in an octagonal shape in the middle of the driest desert in the world.
Here we can observe three species of flamingo that feed on the brine made of salt.
In the afternoon we visit the impressive Valley of the Moon.
It is located around 18 kilometers west of San Pedro de Atacama and is part of the Los Flamencos nature reserve, which is managed by the Atacameño communities.
This unreal place, one of the most spectacular in the Atacama Desert, is so named because of its unique geological formations that closely resemble a lunar landscape.
Here we explore this beautiful landscape and visit the strange figures that nature has created out of salt and clay. F / - / -
Day 4
El Tatio Geysers & Machuca
The journey to the El Tatio geysers begins in the morning before sunrise.
The steam fountains are best seen at dawn, when the hot water vapor condenses in the icy morning air.
Dozens of fumaroles spit and boil and fountains shoot up again and again.
We take time to admire this natural spectacle.
Then we drive to a typical small highland village at an altitude of 3.400 m.
Machuca used to serve as a resting place for the llama caravans on the way along the Inca Road.
Few people still live here today.
It is a picturesque place in the middle of the highlands with breathtaking views of the Andes and the Atacama salt lake. F / - / -
Day 5
San Pedro de Atamaca - Calama - Temuco - Pucon
After breakfast the airport transfer to Calama takes place, and with a flight over Santiago we reach Temuco in the northern lake region.
This city is the capital of the Mapuche people and the Araucarien region.
After a short tour of the city including a visit to the fruit and vegetable market, we continue to Pucon, a small town which was founded by German immigrants and is located on the shores of Lake Villarrica.
Our hotel is located a few kilometers outside of Pucon on the way to Lago Caburga.
2 nights at Hotel Landhaus San Sebastian *** or Hotel Antumalal ****. F / - / -
Day 6
Araucarier forests and Mapuche villages
After a delicious breakfast we drive towards the Argentine border.
Our 3-hour easy hike through one of the few dense Araucarier forests in Chile begins here.
We are accompanied by the impressive view of the nearby snow-covered Lanin volcano.
The huge Araucarier tree with its hard, broad needles looks like the relic of a bygone era; its fruits, the "Pehuen", have always served the Mapuche Indians as a source of a wide variety of dishes.
We then enjoy these dishes in nearby Currarehue.
Here we get to know the nationally known Mapuche chef Anita Epulef, who not only prepares a delicious lunch for us but also gives us an insight into the culture and traditions of the Mapuche.
We visit a medicinal herb garden where we can discover some of the secrets of the Mapuche's increasingly valued natural medicine.
A huge variety of plants and herbs awaits us here, with both the purpose and the healing process being clearly defined for each individual medicinal herb.
We also learn more about the so-called "Machi" who, as medicine men or women, can often cure diseases with their wisdom and the help of natural plants, where traditional medicine has already reached its limits.
Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. B / L / - lunch included
Day 7
Pucon - Huilo Huilo / Puerto Fuy
Our journey continues even deeper into the Andean Cordillera to "Huilo Huilo", a private nature reserve in which 100.000 hectares of primeval forest with its huge biodiversity are protected and cared for.
Here, a sustainable tourism project was successfully developed as the main source of income for the local population, in a region in which precious rainforest was previously cleared.
The park's numerous hiking trails lead past hidden lagoons and crystal clear rivers, through forests that are now a paradise for a multitude of native bird species and also for the endangered Huemul (Andean deer).
We visit this waterfall and get to know the “Sendero de los Espiritus” path on a one-hour hike.
1 night Hotel Marina del Fuy *** or Hotel Reino Fungi ****. F / - / -
Day 8
Huilo Huilo - Puerto Varas
On our journey south we reach Frutillar on Lake Llanquihue, where we can gather further impressions of the difficult times of the early settlements in the open-air museum of German immigrants.
Then we continue our journey to the "City of Roses" to arrive in Puerto Varas.
This small town has experienced a real tourism boom in recent years.
2 nights at Hotel Cabaña del Lago **** or Hotel Cumbres *****. F / - / -
Day 9
Petrohue & All Saints Lake
Our excursion to the oldest national park in Chile, the Vicente Perez Rosales, starts in the morning.
During the trip we learn a lot about the fauna and flora in this area and after arriving in the picturesque town of Petrohue we enjoy a fantastic view of the All Saints Lake and the volcanoes Osorno, Calbuco and Puntiagudo.
On short hikes at the foot of the Osorno volcano and at the Petrohue waterfalls, we learn a lot about the local flora and fauna.
Return to Puerto Varas. F / - / -
Day 10
Puerto Varas - Punta Arenas - Torres del Paine National Park
Airport transfer to Puerto Montt. After a 2½ hour flight we land in Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world.
From here our journey into the heart of Patagonia begins.
Our route takes us through the typical pampas landscape of the Magallanes region, past the huge estancias (sheep farms) of Patagonia.
We visit the impressive Milodon Cave, where the remains of a giant sloth were found that lived here 12.000 years ago.
In the late afternoon we reach the beautiful Torres del Paine National Park, where we spend two nights in a cozy hotel on the edge of the park.
2 nights Hotel Rio Serrano *** or Hotel Lago Gray, superior room **** F / - / -
Day 11
Torres del Paine
The Torres del Paine National Park is undoubtedly one of the most impressive natural spectacles on the American continent.
We have the entire day for an extensive exploration of the park.
From the shores of Lake Gray, we observe the drifting ice floes and the Gray Glacier opposite during a hike. Then we visit the thundering waterfalls Salto Grande and Salto Chico, as well as the lovely Laguna Amarga. On short hikes we will encounter the lush fauna of the park, for example herds of guanacos, flamingos, rabbits, ñandus and, with a little luck, condors.
After this tour full of fantastic impressions, we drive back to our hotel. F / - / -
Day 12
Torres del Paine - Puerto Natales
We use the day until late afternoon for another visit to the park.
Then departure from the hotel to Puerto Natales, the small town on the Ultima Esperanza fjord.
1 night Hotel Weskar Lodge *** or Hotel The Singular *****. F / - /
Day 13
Puerto Natales - Punta Arenas - Santiago
