On this tour, you can marvel at the picturesque landscape of the lake district on a wonderful drive along Lake Llanquihue. After a one-hour drive, we reach the oldest national park in Chile, Vicente Pérez Rosales. The road then leads through dense jungle up the slopes of the Osorno volcano to the ski station at an altitude of almost 1.600 m. A short walk offers unforgettable panoramic views of Lake Llanquihue and the Andes mountain range. Once back in the valley, we visit the famous rapids of the Petrohué River. It rushes loudly through its uneven bed, surrounded by a breathtaking landscape. Then we continue to the nearby Todos Los Santos Lake, the "All Saints Lake", which lies at the foot of the Osorno volcano.

With its emerald green water surface, many visitors consider it the most beautiful lake in Chile. After a short walk along the lava beach, we return to Puerto Varas.

Day 5: Puerto Varas – Chaitén / Lago Yelcho (9-10 hours drive including 4,5 hours ferry / 260-310 km)

Chile Patagonia Day5 La Junta 20231007

Chile Patagonia Day5 B 20231007

Today we set off early towards the south on the Carretera Austral, the partly still unpaved and attractive extension of the Chilean Pan-American Highway.

We cross the rugged Patagonian fjords on several ferry trips that take us through completely untouched landscapes. We cross the Pumalin National Park, whose lush green vegetation accompanies us on both sides of the road.

Finally, we reach the small town of Chaitén, which was largely destroyed after the unexpected eruption of the volcano of the same name in 2008. The locals tell us about this experience and the hardships of rebuilding after their return. Depending on availability, we will spend the night in Chaitén or at the nearby Lago Yelcho.

Day 7: Queulat National Park – Coyhaique (5-6 hours drive / 240-280 km)

Chile Patagonia Day7 A 20231007

After a short drive, today's program includes a hike that takes us through the Queulat National Park. We reach a viewpoint from which we can enjoy the view of the impressive hanging glacier "Ventisquero Colgante" and its waterfall. The journey then continues south along the lush, wild vegetation of the Carretera Austral. Huge Nalca plants and gigantic ferns decorate the side of the road, dense forests, quiet fjords and snow-capped peaks form a fabulous primeval landscape.

The road winds its way in tight serpentines towards the peaks to one of the highest passes on the Carretera Austral and then drops abruptly again until we reach the raging Rio Cisnes (the Swan River).

Here the impenetrable, evergreen rainforests thin out and make way for the rugged southern Patagonian mountain landscape. Through the wild and romantic valley of the Río Simpson we reach the capital of the Aisén region, Coyhaique.

*Approximate duration: 3 h / Distance: 6,5 km / Elevation difference: +370 m

Overnight stay in Coyhaique, Hotel Belisario Jara.

Day 8: Coyhaique – Lago General Carrera (5 h drive / 275 km)

Chile Patagonia Day8 A 20231007

Today we leave Coyhaique and drive through an increasingly barren steppe landscape. We cross a deeply cut valley, the rock of which shimmers in a variety of colors. At the "Devil's Pass" a fabulous panorama opens up to us, from the Cerro Castillo massif to the peaks and glaciers of the northern ice field. In 1990 the Hudson volcano erupted here and smothered the vegetation with its ash rain, dammed rivers and left behind a desolate ghost valley full of dead trees and vast swamps. The endless southern beech forests begin in the valley of the Rio Murta. The turquoise waters of Lago General Carrera shine from afar. Framed by the bare, reddish shimmering hills of the Pampa, the massive massifs of the ice fields and a bright sky, this gigantic lake with its constantly changing blue-green water surface lies before us.

Another highlight awaits us today: the spectacular Exploradores glacier. From Puerto Guadal we drive north and then into the Exploradores valley, making several photo stops before finally reaching the entrance to the viewpoint. After a short climb* we are treated to impressive views of the Exploradores glacier, the largest of the numerous foothills of Mount San Valentin, which at 4.058 m is the highest in Patagonia. The glaciers form part of the northern Patagonian ice field, which was once part of the largest ice mass outside the poles.

Chile Patagonia Day 11 Fitzroy 20231007

Today we drive the legendary Ruta 40, which takes us ever further south through the endless steppe landscape of Patagonia. Lago Cardiel with its milky turquoise glacier meltwater brings color to this endless expanse, whose monotony impresses. Finally, we move away from Ruta 40 and approach the Andes again. If the weather is good, the fantastic rock formations of the Fitz Roy (3.405 m) massif can soon be seen; soon after, we reach El Chaltén.

Day 13: Calafate - Glacier National Park - Perito Moreno Glacier (6-7 h drive / 370 Km) Argentina

El Calafate is the capital of Departamento Lago Argentino and center of the Tourism for  Los Glaciares National Park with the famous glacier Perito Moreno Glacier at the foot of the Andes and is located in Argentina in the province of Santa Cruz. It is a rapidly growing small town in the southwest Argentina in the province Santa Cruz on the banks of the Argentino lake at a height of about 200 meters.

Today the journey takes you past the emerald green Lago Viedma through the endless expanses of the Argentine pampas to El Calafate on Lago Argentino. Immediately after arrival, the journey continues to the Perito Moreno glacier. At the entrance to the Los Glaciares National Park, the previously treeless pampas transform almost seamlessly into dense southern beech forests. The southern arm of Lago Argentino appears turquoise against the milky gray cloud walls of the southern ice fields. The occasional floating iceberg bears witness to the proximity of one of the world's most powerful natural phenomena. The Perito Moreno glacier pushes huge masses of ice from the continental ice fields down into the valley with unimaginable force, which then crash into the lake with a thunderous crash. The icy river moves up to 2 meters a day, making it one of the few growing glaciers in the world. You can watch this magnificent spectacle up close from a platform.

Day 14: El Calafate – Torres Del Paine National Park (4-5 hours drive / 280 km)

Chile Patagonia Day14 Torres Del Paine 20231007

On Ruta 40 we cross the Argentinean Pampa one last time on our way to the Chilean border. From here we drive towards the Torres del Paine National Park, which is one of the highlights of our trip. Herds of guanacos on gently rolling steppe landscapes, rugged red-grey rock massifs, granite towers, milky-green lakes and shimmering white ice fields combine to create a magnificent panorama.

Overnight stay at Torres del Paine, Hotel del Paine

(F / - / -)

Day 15: Torres Del Paine National Park

Today, a challenging full-day hike* takes us to the viewpoint of the eponymous three towers ("Las Torres"). First, we go uphill in serpentines to the Refugio El Chileno, which lies on the banks of the Ascencio River in the shade of a lenga forest. From here, we follow the hiking trail for another hour and a half until it gets steeper and finally disappears between the stones of a moraine, which we climb up for the last part of the way. Once at the top, we reach the easternmost point of the lagoon, from where we enjoy a wonderful view of the towers behind it as well as the surrounding mountains Peineta and Condor's Nest. After a well-deserved break in unforgettable nature, we return to the starting point the same way.
